About thirty kilometres north is Castagneto Carducci. Hometown of one of Italy's most famous poets, offers a beautiful view, lots of typical character and is a great place for eating out.

About 40km south of Piombino is the Maremma, a rural area between mountains and sea that has preserved its rough and rustic character. The Maremma reaches from Massa Marittima to the Fountains of Saturnia near the southern border of Tuscany. But not only the landscape is fascinating, also small towns like Scansano and Pitigliano have got their very distinctive character. At the coast the Maremma is equally beautiful - among the highlights is the Monte St. Argentario and the fishing town Castiglione della Pescaia.

Close to Piombino (15 km) are two towns full of narrow lanes and quaint houses: Campiglia and Suvereto. Even though these towns are small, there are a lot of interesting details to discover here. (See the picture in the background.)

The two most well-known sea-side towns next to Piombino are Follonica
and San Vincenzo (both about 20 - 30 km). Even though they don't offer an old city center, both are very popular with tourists because of their long beaches and variety of shops. For a stroll along the promenade, seeing and being seen, these places are ideal.

In the direction of Sassetta and Monteverdi
you will find that the landscape gets increasingly hilly and full of trees
(among these a multitude of chestnut trees).
